Still More PS3 Launch Details

October 20th 2006 07:53
At yesterday's Sony Gamer Day in Europe, Sony dropped more about the specifics of the upcoming Playstation 3 launch. Firstly, they gave gamers and the media a new, freshly updated list of "launch window" release titles. Be aware that this term tends to indicate "within six months" of the console's launch these days, which is a bit of a worry. Nevertheless, there are some quality titles here, even if none of them are exclusive to the PS3.

Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII (Ubisoft)
Call of Duty 3 (Activision)
Fight Night Round 3 (Electronic Arts)
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Bethesda Softworks)

F.E.A.R. (Vivendi Universal Games)
Full Auto 2: Battlelines (Sega)
Genji: Days of the Blade (Sony)
Madden NFL 07 (Electronic Arts)
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (Activision)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire (Namco Bandai Games)
NBA 07 (Sony)
NBA 2K7 (2K Sports)
Need For Speed Carbon (Electronic Arts)
NHL 2K7 (2K Sports)
Resistance: Fall of Man (Sony)
Ridge Racer 7 (Namco Bandai)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 (Electronic Arts)
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas (Ubisoft)
Tony Hawk's Project 8 (Activision)
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (Sony Online Entertainment)

Sony also discussed in more detail how their online service will work. It will be called "The Playstation Network", and will be free for all users (you still need to pay for your broadband connection though, of course). The interface, Xross Media Bar, is supposedly very similar to that of the PSP, which I've never used myself. It breaks up into three sections. Gaming, entertainment and network. Users will create a single tag, or name, which will function as thier own online identify. This will be their "Playstation Profile". Users will also be able to download online content over the Playstation Store (the equivalent of the Xbox Live Marketplace).

In the States the console will come bundled with a blu-ray version of Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Not being that sucessful over here though, I think Sony Australia may go with a different movie title come March next year.

I'll deliver news on pricing tomorrow. Stay tuned!
