PS3 Pre-order Madness Begins
October 12th 2006 09:41
A lot of people have been waiting a very long time for Sony's new gaming console, the Playstation 3. It's been five years since the Playstation 2 hit store shelves, and over the past year, as more and more has become known about this expensive (but ridiculously powerful) beast, anticipation has risen ten fold.
Although the machine will not see a release in Oz until early next year, this November the PS3 will be launched in the US and Japan. Earlier this week, major gaming stores in North America began taking pre-orders on the console. Now Sony has stated that only 400,000 of these beauties will be available at launch in the States, and therefore lines were pretty darn large trying to throw down a deposit at major US chains Gamestop and EB Games. To put it in perspective, that's about eight consoles per game store.
It's no wonder that pre-orders were snapped up pretty quickly, so much so that people have been selling their pre-orders on Ebay already. One is purportedly going for a massive US$1,000,000. That's a fair chunk of change right there.
"Americans are all crazy though", I hear you saying. Well, yes, some of them are, but trust me, the situation in Australia come March 2007 (the current release date for PAL regions) will be little better, if at all. Considering the blemish Australia is on the global gaming market, you can expect Sony Australia to have trouble getting a considerable number of units on-hand for the Oz launch. Sony have only been manufacturing this thing for a couple of months, unlike Nintendo with their Wii, have has been in production for almost twice as long.
So what's the moral of the story? If you want a PS3 next year, you're going to have to throw your money down, and soon. Head down to your nearest store and ensure your copy, because if the Xbox 360 is anything to go by (and it is), there will be mass worldwide shortages of the PS3 in 2007. Mark my words.
