National Geographic Will Make Video Games

November 20th 2008 22:59
The National Geographic Society, which is most known for their long-running science and educational magazine, has made the announcement that they will be creating video games. The company will launch three gaming products that will be followed by three (to date) video games. The games will be developed for major consoles, handhelds, and mobile platforms.

The gaming division of the National Geographic company will try to connect with people via the Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation 3, Nintendo DS, PC and Mac, the PS3 Network, and the iPhone. They will also create Flash games online at nationalgeographic.com/channel

The games are meant to bring a little fun into learning, but at the same time, “they are games, first and foremost,” says Levine of the National Geographic Games division. The games will be an entertainment to gamers but they will have substance. Although, they probably won’t be in schools anytime soon, the games are intended to bring spunk and excitement into learning.

The first game that National Geographic released is “Herold’s Lost Tomb” which is an online game for PC and iPhone. The game is based off of the biblical figure King Herod, an architect of the ancient world.

National Geographic is working with Namco Bandai Games America and Sony Computer Entertainment to create and release games for gaming consoles like the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PlayStation 3.

Other National Geographic games that you will find in the future will include Namco Bandai's "National Geographic: Panda" for the Nintendo DS, which will be available in November/December. The game will be similar to a blend of the "Nintendogs” and "Zoo Tycoon” video games that 1) put you in the care of a new puppy and 2) put you in control and care of a zoo.

Other games will include “Rain Forests” and “Greencity” which will be available next year, and “National Geographic: Africa ” which will be available next month with Sony.
