Gaming for Life - November 2006

Killzone in the works for PS3

November 27th 2006 23:51
Back at E3 of 2005, Sony showed off CVG footage of Killzone running on PS3 hardware. The video was nothing short of amazing, but was somewhat controversial as it was from a first person perspective, and many believed Sony were trying to give the impression that the video was actually gameplay footage, which it clearly wasn't.

Since then, there has been no information anywhere about a next generation Killzone iteration. Finally, a year and a half later, and following the recent dissapointing launch of the console in Japan and North America, a story has shown up in a dutch newspaper, de Volksrant, proving that the game is indeed well into development.

Costing over $20 million US, and comprising a development team of over 120 members, Killzone is certainly going to be one high profile release. Although there is no indication in the article of when the title will reach stores, late next year would be a good bet. Also of note is that Killzone on PS3 will apparently support downloadable over the Playstation Store, which is a good sign of things to come for PS3 owners with a broadband connection.

Sony will have high hopes for this one, as the original Killzone was relatively successful on the PS2, and it is in dire need of some killer titles exclusive to its brand spanking new machine.

Next Gen Wars

November 22nd 2006 03:31
For those interested, www.nexgenwars.com is a site devoted to following Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft's struggle to win gamers' cash. It features a snazzy ticker which displays how many PS3s, Xbox 360s and Wiis have been sold. Of course, these are estimates, but are updated as regularly as possible. As of today, here are the figures:

Xbox 360 - 7,236,707

Sony Playstation - 270,336

Nintendo Wii - 719,729

Now it must be noted that there are nowhere near as many PS3s available as there are Wiis. The Wii is also over less than half the price of the PS3 in the states. But still, that's a big difference in sales. Unfortunately for Sony, a lot of people have been unimpressed with the new PS3. Sony claimed it would do a lot of things, but unfortunately it still has a way to go. Hopefully firmware updates will come along not too far down the track, but it's definitely a worry at this early stage.

It's a different story altogether for Nintendo. The Wii has already been more of a success than most people thought possible. Perhaps the dark days of the Gamecube are finally behind the Japanese giant.

PS3 Game Reviews Coming In

November 16th 2006 00:18
Well as I'm sure you know November equals PS3 release in the United States, and whilst this doesn't mean much for us poor Aussie gamers (unless you're importing, of course) it does give us a chanch to find out just which launch games will be worth buying when the system makes it to our shores sometime next year.

Gamerankings.com is a US site that compiles, sifts through and sorts game reviews from websites and magazines alike, and is normally your best bet if your trying to find out if a game is any good. Although not all launch titles have been reviewed yet, here are the ones that have, with their average review score.

Resistance: Fall of Man - 90.3%
Marvel Ultimate Alliance - 85.6%
Genji: Days of the Blade - 58.0%
Madden NFL 07 - 75.0%
Tony Hawk's Project 8 - 78.7%
NBA 07 - 72.7%
Ridge Racer 7 - 82%
Call of Duty 3 - 88.3%

Although boasting four games with an average score of over 80% is not bad for a new console, PS3's baby, Resistance: Fall of Man, looks like it's going to do wonders for the system. With the Xbox 360's Gears of War becoming the 18th highest ranked video game EVER (on gamerankings.com) and selling like hot cakes, MS have the perfect antitodote to the PS3 launch. Sony execs would be feeling the heat, but Fall of Man should relieve some of that. After all, its taken the Xbox 360 until a year into its lifespan to get a true killer app. Will Fall of Man really prove to be a system seller though? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Gears of War Unleashed

November 8th 2006 07:32
Today in the US is 'Emergence Day'. That means that Microsoft's highly touted, first person, next gen shooter, Gears of War, will be released on the Xbox 360. Word is that this one is the system seller, the Halo of the 360. Early launch reviews the world over average 9.4, a significantly high medium score.

Developed by Epic Games and released exclusively on MS's new white box, Gears of War is a "pop and stop" shooter which requires use of cover tactics and teamwork to succeed, contains survival horror elements, and has been described as the best looking video game ever made.

Emergency Day in Australia is 23rd November.

The Next Gen Console War - Part 2

November 1st 2006 04:29
The single biggest reason why Microsoft has to be the favourite as we enter this "next generation" of console gaming, is quite a simple one. They got a head start. As much as you may think its irrelevant, without Sony's head start current gen, they'd have no-where near the market share they can boast now.

You need to get your consoles in people's homes. Sony were able to make a LOT of money on the PS2, because they were able to market games (or more to the point, applications) to the "soft-core", the recreational gamers. Those people who like party games, simple games, games that are easy to pick up and play. It's hard to get those kinds of people to buy consoles though. At least it has been in the past. Have Sony changed all that? Have they started the wheels in motion? I think so. Will they be the ones to reap the ultimate benefits from broadening the appeal of video games in the living room? Uh uh.

Whilst Sony is prepping their bad boy and working out how they are going to avoid unavoidable shortages and get some killer titles out as quickly as possible, Nintendo will be stocking shelves all over the world with their hot new console, and people will be tripping over each other to get their hands on the controller that could revolutionise gaming.

However the Xbox 360 will be firmly entrenched already in homes around the globe. Over 30 countries. Already. By years end, there'll be over 100 titles available (retail) and dozens of arcade titles, catering perfectly to the people Sony helped up on to the bandwagon with their Eye-toy games and the like. It's one huge advantage to have.
